Salticidae Checklist: Jumping Spiders
Jumping spiders from the family Salticidae Blackwall, 1841 are active hunting predators. Based on the World Spider Catalog, Salticidae has over 600 described genera and 6000 described species (and still counting), making it the largest family of spiders in the world based on number of described species.
One of the reasons for the popularity of jumping spiders is its seemingly baby-like face, largely due to the grossly enlarged anterior median eyes (AME). The face of salticids is one of the most popular subjects for macro photography for that very reason. That is also probably why the popular Lucas the Spider is based on a jumping spider.
In fact, due to the semblance to human faces and the rising popularity of some online conferencing software, the following picture was simply… inevitable.

Checklist
This page consists of a personal checklist of all Jumping Spiders (Salticidae) that I’ve encountered over the years. Please do not assume the identification of a spider simply based on the photographs here as identification is usually based on examination of minute parts of the spider such as the genitalia. Many thanks to Paul Ng for the assistance in identifying many of specimens from Singapore.
All photos are of live subjects shot in the field, with the dorsal view selected where available. Click on individual photos for larger views and views from other angles. As most specimens were not collected, identifications were done purely based on photographs and may not be 100% accurate.
This page will be updated regularly, please let me know if you spot any mistakes.

What a wonderful atlas and reference this is, Nicky!
By far, this is the most comprehensive one that I had seen and something that I’ll definitely bookmark for identifying my own finds and observations, especially since Singapore’s jumping spider diversity is not very different to ours here in the Philippines.
Thanks a lot for doing this and for all your efforts. 🙂
Regards,
Reyn

The way you’ve arranged various genus and species is just awesome. You’ve kept an eye on every possible details and you have multiple angle shots of almost every species.
I’ve never seen such an ordered and systematic account of these little creatures.
Great job!
Nicky Bay
Thanks Brahad!
Do check out Vida Van Der Walt’s jumping spiders page (in the related sites section). She has an extensive collection with multiple angles of salticids from South Africa!
Vida van der Walt
It is wonderful to see all the different salticids you’ve photographed Nicky. Like all your work, truly masterful!
Nicky Bay
Thanks so much Vida. You know that all of these checklists were inspired by your website right? =D

Staunting work. Congrats!
Here in my backyard (in Brazil) I can find a lot of cool species of those little creatures. I love them.
